Donald Bers

Principal Investigator

Dr. Bers has an extensive and productive track record in studies of cardiac Ca signaling, with both extensive publications and continuous strong NIH grant funding for more than 35 years. He has trained more than 100 Ph.D. students, postdocs, and junior faculty, most of who have gone on to successful careers in science and medicine. Dr. Bers also has an extensive network of productive collaborators throughout the world and has been an effective leader of large research groups (e.g., PI of Program Project Grant), as chair of academic departments (at UC Riverside, Loyola University Chicago, and UC Davis) and PI of an NIH T32 training grant in pharmacology. Much of his scientific work has focused on Na & Ca transport, CaM, CaMKII and adrenergic signaling and electrophysiology in the heart and been published in over 500 papers [PubMed]  that have been highly cited. This work has always been with an eye toward testing mechanistic molecular to integrative hypotheses in multiple aspects of cardiac function and clinical relevance.  This detailed fundamental quantitative mechanistic understanding has created a modern framework for understanding how the heart functions in normal physiological and diseased states.
